La città complessa invited us to make a workshop on a big site among Municipalities of Pordenone, Porcia and Roveredo in Piano where houses and factories grew up on an agricultural area without planning.

We started masterplan dividing area in two big parts: the residential and the industrial ones, planning infrastructures first, whose lack was a recognized emergency. A big road, linked to highway, surrounded the whole site, unloading old streets from heavy traffic. Industry took the blue areas on left and right sides.

While residence was situated in the middle like a link between north (Roveredo in Piano) and south (Pordenone and Porcia) areas.

They also asked to plan an innovative research center on renewable energies (RER), that we put in the very center of masterplan. The red line going north-south is a new metropolitan train from Pordenone central station to Roveredo, stopping at RER.

RER has an underground parking, a pavillon plan and a big roof full of photovoltaic panels. Pavillon plan let RER developing in the future evolving according to necessity.

Residential expansion was regulated in space and density. Orizontal density was normally law, but vertical density grows up going close to the city, until 3/5 levels apartments buildings. Going north, in a more agricultural landscape, buildings are 1/2 levels high, made of single-double family houses or detatched ones.

North was the area where we planned small indipendent houses: besides we decided not to force people to accept new typologies, but to tranform the existing ones making some more rational changes about orientation, borders and natural ground. One of the most important news was the fact of giving them a sense of community they lost in time. No borders between houses and collective functions (barbecue, playgrounds) above all.

People can choose the kind of settlement in a fixed-density area. So we can have border houses, cluster houses and random ones. This means different kinds of relations between inhabitants and different kind of green spaces around.

More or less, the same arguments were used to approach industrial expansion. Regarding density we try to get it lower, raising up green areas.

Industrial zone were divided in 3 parts, corresponding to different kinds of settlements about density, typology, position.

A new big park instead of existing and disused quarries is planned in the western part of masterplan, facing the eastern park called Il villaggio del fanciullo. A network of pedestrian and biking pathways connect two huge parks and green corridors in the area.
